The HRN216 replaced the HRR216 in 2019. The quickest way to tell which engine you have: the HRN216 uses the GCV170 and the HRR216 uses the GCV160. Both have Honda's twin-blade deck.

Find the model number

The mower model (HRN216 or HRR216, plus letters such as VKA) is on the label on the mower. The engine has its own sticker, starting with G. Honda's parts catalog needs both the mower model and its serial number.

Maintenance and repairs, step by step

Remove and refit the twin blades

Once a year, or when the cut looks torn.

Safety Shut off the engine, wait for the blade to stop, and pull the wire off the spark plug before you reach under the deck. Wear heavy gloves: the blade is sharp even when dull.

Remove and refit the twin blades: steps
01Run the tank low or empty. Pull the cap off the spark plug.
02Tilt the mower so the engine's muffler side is down. Never tilt it with the carburetor side down. That is Honda's rule for the GCV170 engine.
03Hold the blades with a block of wood and remove the blade bolts.Note which blade is upper and which is lower.
04Sharpen and balance the blades, or fit new ones. Replace any bent or cracked blade.Lower 72511-VR8-M00, upper 72531-VR8-M00.
05Refit the blades in the same order and tighten the bolts to the torque in your mower's owner's manual. We could not confirm Honda's figure for the HRN216, so it is not given here.
06Set the mower upright, refit the plug cap, and test that the blades stop when you let go of the bar.
