Maintenance and repairs, step by step
Start a cold engine
From the ECHO PB-580H/T operator's manual.
| 01 | Move the choke to the COLD START position. | |
| 02 | Pump the purge bulb until you see fuel in it, then 4 or 5 more times. | |
| 03 | Hold the unit firmly and pull the starter with short pulls, about half to two thirds of the rope, up to 5 times. | |
| 04 | When it fires, move the choke to RUN and pull until it runs. Let it warm up at idle for a few minutes. | If it won't start on RUN after 5 pulls, go back to step 1. |
Clean or replace the air filter
Inspect daily. Replace every 3 months.
| 01 | Close the choke (COLD START position) so dirt can't fall into the carburetor. | |
| 02 | Brush dirt off the air cleaner area. Remove the filter cover and brush out the inside. | |
| 03 | Take out the filter and brush it lightly. | Replace it (A226000032) if it is damaged, fuel soaked, very dirty, or its rubber edge is out of shape. |
| 04 | Refit the filter and the cover. |
Replace the fuel filter
Inspect every 3 months; replace yearly or if dirty.
Safety Fuel is flammable. Do this outdoors, away from sparks and flames.
| 01 | Wipe dirt off around the fuel cap and empty the tank. | |
| 02 | Pull the fuel line and filter out of the tank opening. | |
| 03 | Pull the old filter off the line and push on a new one (A369000460). | Replacement fuel hoses on 2012 and later units must be EPA-certified. |
| 04 | Drop the filter back into the tank and refit the cap. |
Replace the spark plug
Inspect every 3 months.
| 01 | Remove the plug and look for fouling or a worn, rounded center electrode. | |
| 02 | Clean it or fit a new NGK BPM8Y. Don't sandblast a plug. | |
| 03 | Set the gap to 0.65 mm (0.026 in) by bending the outer electrode. | |
| 04 | Tighten to 130–150 lbf·in. |
Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Won't start | Not primed, wrong choke position, or old mix | Pump the purge bulb until fuel shows plus 4 or 5 more. Use fresh 50:1 fuel. |
| Starts and dies | Clogged fuel filter or dirty air filter | Replace the fuel filter and clean the air filter. |
| Loses power or runs hot | Blocked cooling air or carbon in the spark arrester screen | Brush debris off the engine cover. Clean the spark arrester screen. |
| Purge bulb cracked or won't refill | Worn bulb or fuel lines | Fit a new bulb (12318140630) or the fuel system kit 90263Y. |
